Welcome to Winchester

Winchester is a 55-square-mile town in southern Cheshire County, drained by the Ashuelot River and bordered by Chesterfield, Swanzey, Richmond and Hinsdale, with Warwick and Northfield, Massachusetts, to the south. State Routes 10, 78 and 119 cross it. The town takes in the main Winchester village, the village of Ashuelot and part of Pisgah State Park, so Winchester NH real estate ranges from mill-era village streets to forested hills.

Living in Winchester, NH

The Ashuelot River and its tributary Mirey Brook run through Winchester, and the entire town lies in the Connecticut River watershed. In the northwest, Pisgah Reservoir and Kilburn Pond sit within the state park lands, while 1,424-foot Franklin Mountain, near the northeastern corner, is the highest point. Winchester has two covered bridges. Its economy has mixed farming with small industry: in the 1830s Graves and Company was among the first musical instrument makers in the country, and the Ashuelot Railroad, which arrived in 1850, brought textile mills and wooden-ware factories, especially box making and leather tanning. The town was first laid out in 1733 as Arlington, one of the Massachusetts border towns along the Connecticut River, and was incorporated as Winchester in 1753 by Governor Benning Wentworth.
