Welcome to Newmarket

Newmarket is a Great Bay town in Rockingham County, built around the falls of the Lamprey River where NH Route 108 meets the eastern end of NH Route 152. Incorporated in 1727 as a parish of Exeter and probably named for Newmarket in Suffolk, England, it grew as a shipping and shipbuilding port and later a textile mill town. Newmarket New Hampshire homes for sale include houses in the compact downtown and in the outlying land toward Great Bay.

Living in Newmarket, NH

The town's center is its brick mill district. The Newmarket Manufacturing Company, founded in 1822, ran seven cotton mills on the Lamprey falls until 1929, and the buildings, now adapted for commercial and residential uses, form the Newmarket Industrial and Commercial Historic District on the National Register since 1980. The Timberland Company was headquartered in the mill in the 1970s. Before the mills, Newmarket traded timber, dried fish and salted alewives to the West Indies and built ships for the Royal Navy. The Lamprey and its tributary the Piscassic drain the town to Great Bay, and about 11 percent of Newmarket is water. Bald Hill near the southwest corner reaches 281 feet, and Great Hill rises just south of the center. Sites include the Stone School Museum and the Stone Church music venue, along with the Newmarket Library and Schanda Park. Newfields was once its South Newmarket parish.
