Welcome to Rollinsford
Rollinsford is a compact Strafford County town on the Salmon Falls River, which forms its eastern boundary and the state line with Maine. It was incorporated in 1849, when the old town of Somersworth split between its two mill falls, and was named for the Rollins family line of Judge Ichabod Rollins, the state's first probate judge. The main village, once called Salmon Falls Village, keeps its brick mill-town grid, and Route 4 links it with Dover and South Berwick, Maine.
Living in Rollinsford, NH
The Salmon Falls Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1822 by investors led by James Rundlet of Portsmouth, and the village was founded the next year to make woolen cloth with the river's power. After an 1834 fire, a new mill was built for cotton, and the village was laid out in an easy grid with three-story brick boarding houses and two-story brick double houses for the overseers. The cotton trade faded, but the brick town survived, and the mills now provide studio space for more than 100 artists and artisans working in painting, sculpture, furniture making, yoga and dance. Rollins and Twombly brooks drain the western half of town south to the Cochecho River in Dover. Garrison Hill, at 290 feet, sits on the Dover border, and a historical marker on Sligo Road recalls the area's first name.
