Welcome to Clarksville

Clarksville is a northern Coos County town wedged between Pittsburg to the north and Stewartstown to the southwest, with Dixville to the south. Its western edge touches the Connecticut River for one mile, across from Beecher Falls in Canaan, Vermont, and the 45th parallel crosses the town. NH Route 145 runs through the western end. Clarksville NH real estate takes in forest and ponds, including parts of Lake Francis, Clarksville Pond and Carr Pond.

Living in Clarksville, NH

Clarksville began as part of the Dartmouth College Grant, a tract the college sold off in sections to raise money; Benjamin Clark of Boston and Joseph Murdock of Norwich, Vermont, bought this piece. It was incorporated in 1853 and renamed Clarksville in 1872 for the Clark family. Starch and maple sugar were major industries in the late 1800s, and logging companies have long been the main employers. NH Route 145 runs south from Pittsburg village through Clarksville into Stewartstown, and before U.S. Route 3 was built along the Connecticut River, it was the only road north to Pittsburg. Crystal Mountain, at 3,230 feet near the southern border, is the high point. The western two thirds of town drain to the Connecticut and the eastern third to the Androscoggin. Clarksville's town hall, at 1,980 feet, is the highest town hall in New Hampshire.
