Welcome to New Ipswich

On the Massachusetts border, New Ipswich, New Hampshire is a Hillsborough County town set in the wooded foothills of the Wapack Range with New Ipswich Mountain as its high point. Granted in 1735 to settlers from Ipswich, Massachusetts, it became an early mill town on the Souhegan River and kept its historic center because the railroad passed it by. New Ipswich NH real estate spreads across old villages such as Bank, Smithville, Highbridge and New Ipswich Center.

Living in New Ipswich, NH

The town is a patchwork of former villages, including Bank, Davis, Gibson Four Corners, Highbridge, New Ipswich Center, Smithville and Wilder, though the names matter less than they once did. The New Ipswich Center Village Historic District, on the National Register since 1991, includes the Town Hall and the Barrett House, a mill-era mansion used as a setting for the 1979 Merchant Ivory film The Europeans. State historical markers note the first textile mills in New Hampshire, a woolen mill of 1801 and a cotton mill of 1804, and the site of Wilder's Chair Factory. The Wapack Trail crosses the ridges, topping out on New Ipswich Mountain at 1,881 feet. The Souhegan River drains the east and center, the Gridley River the northwest corner, and Mountain, Island and Binney ponds in the southwest feed the Millers River. Second-growth forest now covers most of the old pastureland.
