Welcome to Lyman

Lyman, New Hampshire is a small, hilly town in northern Grafton County, bounded on the west by the long ridge of Gardner Mountain, with the town of Monroe on the far side. Its streams feed the Ammonoosuc River and, through it, the Connecticut. Lyman covers about 28.7 square miles, almost all of it land, and its high point sits just east of Signal Mountain, a knob on the Gardner Mountain ridge at 2,285 feet.

Living in Lyman, NH

Lyman's story is tied to the mountain on its western edge. The town was granted on November 10, 1761, to Daniel Lyman and 63 others, and it takes its name from the eleven grantees who were named Lyman. It was one of several grants, along with Grantham, Lisbon and eleven Vermont towns, given as compensation to General Phineas Lyman, a commander in the French and Indian War. The first grantees failed to meet their charter terms, and an extension came in 1769. Lyman originally reached all the way to the Connecticut River, but settlers on the far side of steep Gardner Mountain found the ridge hard to cross, and in 1854 that western part became the separate town of Monroe. What remains is upland drained by small tributaries of the Ammonoosuc River.
