Welcome to South Hampton

South Hampton is a small Rockingham County town on the Massachusetts line, with Amesbury to the south and Kensington, Seabrook, Newton and East Kingston around its other sides. Chartered in 1742 by Governor Benning Wentworth from land once part of Amesbury and Salisbury, it is home to Cowden State Forest and Powwow River State Forest. South Hampton NH real estate spreads along Routes 107A and 150 across about eight square miles of the Powwow River valley.

Living in South Hampton, NH

The town was one of the first Benning Wentworth granted after New Hampshire and Massachusetts got separate governors in 1741 and the border between them was fixed. Over the years it lost land to Hampton Falls, Seabrook and Newton and gained some from East Kingston in 1824, and despite its name it no longer touches Hampton. The Powwow River drains the whole town toward the Merrimack, and open water is scarce. Chair Hill, near the eastern end of town at 330 feet, is the high point. Cowden State Forest and Powwow River State Forest protect woodland within the town, and local attractions include Heron Pond Farm and Jewell Towne Vineyards. Routes 107A and 150 are the main roads, and Interstate 495 is one town south in Amesbury. The Barnard School teaches kindergarten through grade 8.
