Welcome to Dover

Dover is a city in Strafford County and its county seat, set where the Cochecho and Bellamy rivers run down to the tidal Piscataqua, the river that forms its eastern border with Maine. Settled at Dover Point in 1623, it is the oldest permanent settlement in New Hampshire, and the fortified log garrisons its settlers built earned it the nickname The Garrison City. Dover NH real estate puts a restored mill downtown, a Downeaster train station and the Spaulding Turnpike within one city.

Living in Dover, NH

Downtown grew up around Cochecho Falls, where a 34-foot drop powered sawmills and later the brick textile mills of the Cocheco Manufacturing Company. The city bought the shuttered millyard at auction in 1941, and today the Cocheco Falls Millworks holds offices, a restaurant and a brewery, while the Children's Museum of New Hampshire fills another old mill building. Henry Law Park, on the site of the former printery, runs along the river, and the Sawyer Woolen Mills beside the Bellamy have been converted to housing. Garrison Hill rises above the center city with a park and lookout tower, and Hilton Park on Dover Point recalls the 1623 landing. The Woodman Institute Museum and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital are here too. Routes 4, 9, 16, 108 and 155 cross the city, and the listing grid below shows homes for sale in Dover NH right now.
