Living in Harts Location, NH
The town follows the floor of Crawford Notch, pinched between steep mountains and in places sheer cliffs, with U.S. Route 302 and the Saco River near its centerline. Its highest ground, about 3,900 feet, lies along the western boundary beneath 4,285-foot Mount Willey. Crawford Notch State Park is in town, and the site of the Willey house, where the Willey family died in a landslide in 1826, is now a state historic site; the tragedy inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne's story The Ambitious Guest. The Conway Scenic Railroad still runs the 1875 railroad line through the notch, crossing the Frankenstein Trestle and the Willey Brook Bridge. Arethusa Falls, the state's highest waterfall, is just over the line in Livermore and reached from Route 302 here. The town keeps a board of selectmen but relies on Bartlett and Carroll County for services, and it drains entirely to the Saco River.
