Welcome to Somersworth

Somersworth is a small city in eastern Strafford County, bordered on the northeast by the Salmon Falls River and the Maine state line, with Berwick, Maine, directly across the bridge. The river drops 100 feet over a mile here, and those Great Falls made Somersworth a textile mill town; the city was even called Great Falls before it incorporated in 1893. Somersworth NH real estate includes restored Victorian homes in the historic district known as The Hill.

Living in Somersworth, NH

High Street, NH Route 9, is the main road, running north into Berwick and south into Dover, and its upper end has grown into a retail strip with big-box stores. Route 108 crosses the western part of the city between Rochester and Dover, and Route 236 leads west out of downtown to meet it. The Great Falls Manufacturing Company's big brick mill on the river was renovated for other uses in the 1980s. Prospect Hill, about 310 feet high, rises just west of the city center and holds the city reservoir. Mill workers once spent free time at the Opera House or at Central Park, an amusement park beside Willand Pond. Places worth a visit include the Summersworth Historical Society and Museum at 157 Main Street, the Somersworth Historic District, Noble Pines and the Somersworth River Walk.
