Welcome to Exeter
Founded in 1638 by John Wheelwright, Exeter is a Rockingham County town built where the Exeter River falls into the tidal Squamscott River. It served as New Hampshire's capital for 14 years during and after the Revolution, was the county seat until 1997, and is home to Phillips Exeter Academy, founded in 1781. Newfields, Stratham, Hampton Falls, Kingston and Brentwood are among its neighbors, and Exeter NH homes for sale range from the downtown along Water Street to the town's outlying roads.
Living in Exeter, NH
Downtown Exeter grew around the falls, and Water Street still holds the Ioka Theatre of 1915. The Swasey Parkway replaced the old wharves and warehouses along the Squamscott, and the Swasey Pavilion, designed by Henry Bacon in 1916, stands on the town square. Architecture runs from Arthur Gilman's 1855 Town Hall to the Phillips Exeter Academy campus by Cram and Ferguson and the 1971 Academy Library by Louis I. Kahn. The American Independence Museum and the Gilman Garrison House occupy former Gilman family homes, and the Exeter Historical Society is in the 1894 Old Public Library. The Great Dam between the two rivers was removed in 2016, and alewife runs have since rebounded. The 235-acre Conner Farm Wildlife Management Area mixes open fields, oak and pine forest and beaver ponds, and Great Hill, at 250 feet, is the high point.
