Welcome to Farmington

Farmington is a Strafford County town on the Cochecho River, home to Blue Job State Forest, the Tebbetts Hill Reservation and Baxter Lake. Its town center sits at the junction of NH Routes 75 and 153, and Route 11 also crosses town. Incorporated in 1798 and named for its farmland, Farmington later became known as The Shoe Capital of New Hampshire. Anyone browsing homes for sale in Farmington NH will find the town reaching from the Cochecho valley into the Blue Hills Range.

Living in Farmington, NH

The Abenaki called the area Chemung, or canoe place, and traveled its three rivers, the Cocheco, the Ela and the Mad, on their way to and from Lake Winnipesaukee. The village grew along Bay Road, surveyed in 1722, and was long called The Dock after Jonas March's store and lumber dock of 1790. A railroad reached Dover in 1849 and Alton Bay in 1851, and the shoe factories that followed made Farmington a center of the trade; a large fire in 1875 destroyed much of the town center. Blue Job Mountain, at 1,350 feet, is the highest point, near the southwestern border in the Blue Hills Range, foothills of the White Mountains. Baxter Lake, on the southeast border, is the largest body of water. Before touring houses for sale in Farmington NH, note the town lies almost entirely in the Piscataqua River coastal watershed.
