Welcome to Greenland

On the southern shore of Great Bay, Greenland is a small Rockingham County town between Portsmouth to the east and Stratham to the west, with Newington, Rye, North Hampton and Newmarket also on its borders. It began as a parish of Portsmouth, then called Strawbery Banke, in 1638 and incorporated in 1721. Greenland NH real estate sits in a landscape shaped by tidewater: more than a fifth of the town's area is water, and the Winnicut River drains most of it.

Living in Greenland, NH

The town takes its name from the farm of Captain Francis Champernowne, who moved out from Strawbery Banke in 1640 and settled on land that is now the Portsmouth Country Club. Around 1710 Captain Samuel Weeks built a brick house that is thought to be the oldest brick house still standing in New Hampshire; it rode out the 1755 Cape Ann earthquake with only cracked beams, and a state historical marker on NH Route 33 points it out. Greenland became a separate parish in 1706 and later annexed parts of Stratham in 1805 and 1847. In 1824 residents greeted the Marquis de Lafayette at a triumphal arch outside the local hotel. Great Bay forms the northern edge of town, and Breakfast Hill, at 151 feet on the Rye line, is the highest ground.
