Welcome to Hampstead
Hampstead is a pond-dotted town in southern Rockingham County, bounded by Derry, Sandown, Danville, Kingston, Plaistow and Atkinson. Its land once belonged to Haverhill and Amesbury, Massachusetts, until the 1739 boundary decision placed it in New Hampshire, and it incorporated in 1749. Hampstead NH real estate spreads around Island Pond, Wash Pond and Angle Pond, between the main village on Route 121 and the village of East Hampstead on Route 121A.
Living in Hampstead, NH
Governor Benning Wentworth named the town after Hampstead, England, the residence of his friend William Pitt; before that it was Timberlane Parish, for its heavy stands of trees. The Hampstead Meetinghouse, built between about 1749 and 1768, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the town claims the first honey factory in the United States, opened in 1816. Island Pond lies in the southwest, Wash Pond, also called Sunset Lake, near the center, and Angle Pond on the northern line. Three state roads cross town: NH 111 from Atkinson to Danville, NH 121, known locally as Main Street and Stage Road, and NH 121A through East Hampstead. A section of the Rockingham Recreational Trail passes through, and Hampstead Central School and Hampstead Middle School serve younger students, with Pinkerton Academy in Derry as the public high school.
