Welcome to North Hampton

North Hampton is a small Atlantic coast town in Rockingham County, with Rye and Greenland to the north, Stratham to the west and Hampton to the south. Settled in 1639 as the North Hill parish of Hampton, it became its own town in 1742. The seaside promontory of Little Boar's Head, a fashionable 19th-century summer resort, is its best-known landmark. North Hampton NH real estate sits between that shoreline and the inland stretch along U.S. Route 1.

Living in North Hampton, NH

Five highways cross North Hampton: Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1, NH Route 1A along the shore, NH 151 and NH 111. Little Boar's Head, on the coast, still shows the late Victorian and Edwardian architecture of its resort era. The town drains in two directions: the Little River flows east straight to the Atlantic, while the Winnicut River runs northwest into Great Bay, which reaches the ocean by way of the Piscataqua River at Portsmouth. The land is low, with Pine Hill on the western border topping out at only 160 feet, and the town touches Exeter at a single point on its western side. Runnymede Farm was home to the thoroughbreds Dancer's Image and Mom's Command, and Mom's Command is buried there; both horses appear on a billboard along NH Route 111. Residents first petitioned to separate from Hampton in 1719, and Governor Benning Wentworth granted township in 1742.
