Welcome to Raymond

Settled from Exeter as a parish of Chester called Freetown, it took the name Raymond when it incorporated in 1764. Part of Pawtuckaway State Park reaches into the north of town. The village common is overlooked by the Dudley-Tucker Library, a Carnegie-funded library that opened in 1908. Trains on the Portsmouth Branch of the Boston and Maine served Raymond from 1850 until 1980; the tracks were pulled up in the 1980s, the line became a rail trail, and the restored depot now houses the Raymond Historical Society. A state historical marker, number 273, honors resident Frank J. Mafera, who patented the first method of weaving chain link fence in 1930 and founded what became the New Hampshire Fence Company here. The Lamprey River and the Exeter River both drain the town into the Piscataqua watershed, and Onway Lake once had a busy gravel pit nearby. Dumplingtown Hill, near the western border at 625 feet, is the highest point, and Raymond High School serves the town.
