Welcome to Rochester

Rochester is a Strafford County city incorporated as a town in 1722 and named for Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester. Beyond its downtown it takes in the villages of East Rochester, Gonic and North Rochester, along with Skyhaven Airport and part of Baxter Lake. The Salmon Falls, Isinglass and Cochecho rivers drain the city, and the six-lane Spaulding Turnpike carries traffic through it, north toward Conway and south to Dover and Portsmouth.

Living in Rochester, NH

Rochester grew as a mill town on the Cochecho River, first with tanneries and woolen mills and then with shoe factories, which had become its leading industry by 1880. That era left fine buildings: the Rochester Opera House, opened on Memorial Day 1908 and the only known theater in the United States still using George G. Adams' movable floor, and the Georgian revival Rochester Public Library, built with Carnegie money. Rochester Common, once 250 acres, keeps a 1914 bandstand used for summer concerts, a walking track and a Civil War monument, and a statue of Parson Amos Main by Giuseppe Moretti presides over the town square. Gonic lies south of downtown along Route 125 at a dam on the Cocheco, and East Rochester sits beside the Salmon Falls River. The Rochester Fair, first held in 1875, is now the Granite State Fair.
