Welcome to Temple

Temple is an elevated, rocky town in western Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, between Wilton to the east and Sharon to the west, with Greenfield, Lyndeborough, Greenville, New Ipswich and Peterborough also on its borders. Temple Mountain forms its western edge south of Route 101, and the town is home to Temple Mountain State Reservation, the former Temple Mountain Ski Area. Temple NH real estate looks out over views that early writers said reached twenty meetinghouses on a clear day.

Living in Temple, NH

Temple began as part of Peterborough Slip and was incorporated in 1768 by Governor John Wentworth, who named it for his lieutenant governor, John Temple. Peter Heald, one of the first settlers in 1758, is generally considered the town's founder. In 1780 Robert Hewes of Boston founded Temple Glassworks, and surviving pieces of Temple glass are now rare collectibles. By the mid-1800s the town had two sawmills, a gristmill and a tannery. Blood Brook and its tributary Temple Brook drain the town east toward the Souhegan River. The highest point, at 2,190 feet, is on an eastern spur of South Pack Monadnock Mountain, and Temple Mountain, at 2,045 feet, runs along the western boundary for several miles. Route 101 crosses the town, and Temple Mountain State Reservation preserves the old ski area. Temple, Maine was named after this town.
