Welcome to Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a city in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, set on the tidal Piscataqua River across from Kittery, Maine. Settled in 1630 as Strawbery Banke and incorporated as a city in 1849, it grew into one of the nation's busiest ports and shipbuilding centers. Buyers looking at Portsmouth NH homes for sale today find a compact, walkable downtown around Market Square, brick Federal-era blocks, and Portsmouth International Airport at Pease on the site of the former air force base.

Living in Portsmouth, NH

The heart of the city is the Portsmouth Downtown Historic District, where an 1813 fire that burned 244 buildings led to a rule that new buildings be brick with slate roofs. Strawbery Banke Museum preserves several dozen restored Colonial, Georgian and Federal homes on the site of the first settlement, and house museums include the Richard Jackson House of 1664, the Moffatt-Ladd House and the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion. Prescott Park on the waterfront has hosted a summer arts festival since 1974, The Music Hall, a 900-seat theater, opened in 1878, and the USS Albacore submarine is open for tours. Interstate 95, U.S. Routes 1 and 4 and NH Routes 1A, 16 and 33 cross the city, COAST runs local buses, and Great Bay Community College has a Portsmouth campus.
