Welcome to Sunapee

Its neighbors are Springfield, New London, Newbury, Goshen, Newport and Croydon. The Sugar River leaves the lake here and flows west toward the Connecticut. Shoppers looking at homes for sale in Sunapee, NH will find a town shaped by the water, where about a sixth of its area is water.

Living in Sunapee, NH

Lake Sunapee defines the town. The name comes from Algonquian words for goose and water, and the lake was called the Lake of the Wild Goose for its shape, with the beak at Sunapee Harbor. It is the only lake in New Hampshire with three working lighthouses, built in the 1890s by the Woodsum brothers and kept today by the Lake Sunapee Protective Association. Grand hotels once ringed the shore, linked by ferries that had mostly disappeared by 1915. Before tourism, Sunapee was industrial; one factory turned out 110 clothespins a minute. Georges Mills is the town's other village, and Wendell, a village at the western edge, keeps the town's earlier name, as does a marsh near Sunapee Middle-High School. The town's highest ground, about 1,600 feet, is on the northern border just north of Ledge Pond.
