Welcome to Nelson

Nelson sits on the height of land between the Connecticut and Merrimack river watersheds in eastern Cheshire County, where its eastern border meets Hillsborough County. Stoddard, Antrim, Hancock, Harrisville, Roxbury and Sullivan surround it, and Route 9 crosses the town. Nelson includes the village of Munsonville at the outlet of Granite Lake. Ponds and lakes cover nearly 6 percent of town, and Nelson NH real estate often sits near that water or along Route 9 and the hill roads.

Living in Nelson, NH

Spoonwood Pond and part of Nubanusit Lake lie in the east of Nelson, part of Silver Lake is in the south and part of Granite Lake is in the north. Munsonville, at the outlet of Granite Lake, once made cotton cloth and chairs, and the L. J. Colony Chair Co. turned out tens of thousands of chairs a year; the mills have closed and the village is now a summer-home resort. The 50-mile Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway passes directly through the center of town on its way from Mount Monadnock to Mount Sunapee. Osgood Hill, also called Nelson Pinnacle, is the highest point at 2,253 feet. The town hall hosts a popular Monday night contradance, part of a tradition of dances held there for over 200 years, and the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music is also in Nelson.
