Welcome to Richmond
Richmond is a 37.7-square-mile town on the Massachusetts line in southern Cheshire County, bordered by Swanzey, Troy, Fitzwilliam and Winchester, with Royalston and Warwick, Massachusetts, to the south. State Routes 32 and 119 serve it. Little Monadnock Mountain stands just beyond its eastern edge in Fitzwilliam, and a low chain of hills called the Franconia Mountain Range runs through the west. For anyone browsing Richmond NH real estate, this is upland country: water covers only about half a percent of the town.
Living in Richmond, NH
Richmond is a town of hills rather than lakes. Its highest point, an unnamed hill at 1,624 feet, stands about a mile northwest of Little Monadnock Mountain, whose 1,883-foot summit lies within a mile of the eastern boundary in neighboring Fitzwilliam. Across western Richmond, the Franconia Mountain Range forms a chain of hills about 1,300 feet high; it should not be confused with the much higher Franconia Range in the White Mountains. Routes 32 and 119 are the main roads. The town's history reaches back to a 1735 Massachusetts charter that granted the land to soldiers returning from the war in Canada as Sylvester-Canada, honoring Captain Joseph Sylvester of Scituate. Once the provincial border was fixed, Governor Benning Wentworth incorporated it in 1752 as Richmond, and settlers from Rhode Island and Massachusetts arrived around 1757.
