Welcome to Gilsum
Gilsum is a small Cheshire County town of about 16.7 square miles north of Keene, drained by the Ashuelot River and served by New Hampshire Route 10. Alstead, Marlow, Stoddard, Sullivan, Keene and Surry border it. The town includes Gilsum Lower Village and Bear's Den Natural Area. Gilsum NH is known for its 1863 Stone Arch Bridge and a long history of mica and feldspar mining, with beryl, tourmaline and quartz crystals still found here.
Living in Gilsum, NH
Gilsum's name blends the surnames of two proprietors, Samuel Gilbert and his son-in-law Thomas Sumner, from the 1763 charter. The Ashuelot River powered woolen mills, and by 1859 the town also had a bobbin factory, a chair factory and a tannery. The Stone Arch Bridge, completed in 1863, has the highest vault of any mortarless bridge in New Hampshire, 36 feet 6 inches, and was added to the National Register in 1989. Gilsum was once a center for mining mica and feldspar, and high-quality crystals, especially beryl, tourmaline and quartz, can still be found. Bear's Den Natural Area protects part of the town. The highest point is an unnamed hill on the eastern boundary at 1,657 feet. Gilsum is also headquarters of the W.S. Badger Company, maker of balms and natural remedies.
