Welcome to Surry
Surry is a small Cheshire County town of about 16 square miles directly north of Keene, bordered by Alstead, Gilsum, Westmoreland and Walpole. Route 12A runs north from Keene through Surry toward Alstead. The town's best-known feature is Surry Dam on the Ashuelot River, which holds back Surry Mountain Lake, a recreation site. Surry NH real estate sits between that lake and the upper slopes of Derry Hill on the western border.
Living in Surry, NH
Surry Dam stands on the Ashuelot River in the south-central part of town. It was completed in 1942 as part of the flood-control program that followed the 1936 floods and the 1938 New England hurricane, which hit Keene hard. Behind it, Surry Mountain Lake now serves as a recreation site. Merriam Brook drops over a waterfall known locally as 40 Foot Falls, visible from Joslin Road. The highest ground is along the western border on the upper slopes of Derry Hill, at 1,555 feet. Surry was chartered in 1769 and named for Charles Howard, 10th Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Surrey, and its first census was taken in 1790. Route 12A is the main road, linking Surry with Keene to the south and Alstead to the north.
