Welcome to Amherst

Amherst sits in southern Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, between Milford and Merrimack, with the Souhegan River crossing its southern end and NH Route 101 linking it to Bedford and Manchester. Chartered in 1760 and named for General Jeffery Amherst, it was the county seat until 1866. The town is known for its historic village green, Baboosic Lake and protected land such as Ponemah Bog, so Amherst NH real estate covers both village and woodland settings.

The heart of town is Amherst Village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Amherst Village Historic District, where Franklin Pierce married Jane Means Appleton in a house on the green.
