Living in Benton, NH

Benton, New Hampshire is mountain and forest land. Its rugged terrain was poorly suited to farming, but water power sites and abundant forests made logging and sawmilling the main work, with five sawmills by 1859 and the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad running through town. Mount Moosilauke dominates: the Prospect House, later the Tip Top House, was built on its summit in 1860, reached by a carriage road from 1870, given with the land to Dartmouth College in 1920, and burned in 1942. The summit of Black Mountain, at 2,830 feet, is also in Benton, and the former State Sanatorium sat on Moosilauke's slopes just inside the town line. The White Mountain woods around Benton are known for cabins on wooded lots, many built as ski or hunting camps.
