Welcome to Orange

Orange, New Hampshire is a small mountain town in southern Grafton County, best known as the home of Mount Cardigan, whose 3,155-foot summit near the town's eastern edge is its high point. Canaan lies to the west, and U.S. Route 4 clips the southwestern corner of town. Orange straddles a divide: its western slopes drain to the Connecticut River through Canaan, while the rest of town feeds the Pemigewasset and Merrimack by way of Newfound Lake and the Smith River.

Living in Orange, NH

Orange was granted in 1769 as Cardigan, named for George Brudenell, fourth Earl of Cardigan, and incorporated in 1790. After the American Revolution, voters tried out Bradford, Middletown and Liscomb before settling on Orange, possibly inspired by the yellow-orange ochre found on Mount Cardigan. The old name survives on the mountain and in Cardigan Mountain State Park. Almost all of the town's 23 square miles is land. Water runs off in many directions: Orange Brook carries the west side to the Indian River in Canaan; the South Branch of the Baker River rises in the north and flows toward Groton and Dorchester; Atwell Brook drains the northeast to the Cockermouth River; brooks off the east face of Cardigan reach the Fowler River in Alexandria; and Mill Brook flows south to the Smith River.
