Living in Dorchester, NH
Life in the town of Dorchester, NH runs along a divide where water flows two ways. The South Branch Baker River runs north through the northeastern half of town, while the Mascoma River and its tributary, the Indian River, flow south through the southwest. Dorchester was named for Dorchester in Dorset, England; after two earlier grants went unsettled, it was regranted in 1772 and settlement began soon after, with the first settlers arriving from Hanover. By 1859 the town had eleven sawmills along with clapboard and shingle mills, and charcoal was made here.
