Welcome to Hillsborough

Hillsborough is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, set along the Contoocook River between Henniker to the east and Antrim to the south, with Bradford, Washington, Windsor and Deering completing its borders. It is best known as the birthplace of Franklin Pierce, the only U.S. president from New Hampshire, and for a cluster of 19th-century stone arch bridges. Hillsborough NH real estate ranges from the river mill district to hill country reaching Thompson Hill in the north.

Living in Hillsborough, NH

The Contoocook River and its tributaries, Beards Brook and Sand Brook, drain the town, and part of Franklin Pierce Lake lies in the southwest corner. The Franklin Pierce Homestead, built in 1804 by his father, General Benjamin Pierce, is a National Historic Landmark run as a museum by the Hillsborough Historical Society. Five stone arch bridges from the 1800s together form a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Other sites include the Contoocook Mills Industrial District, the 1887 Union Chapel and a DAR Museum Room inside the Fuller Public Library. Trains of the Boston and Maine served the town from 1878 to 1972, and the old line between Hillsborough and Bennington is now a rail trail. Public schools are the Hillsboro-Deering schools of SAU 34, shared with neighboring Deering.
