Welcome to Peterborough

Peterborough is a Monadnock region town in western Hillsborough County, built around a village on the Contoocook River where U.S. Route 202 meets NH Route 101. Settled in 1749 as a mill town on the river and Nubanusit Brook, it is known today for the MacDowell Colony, the Peterborough Players and the first tax-supported free public library in the United States. Peterborough NH real estate also reaches up to South Pack Monadnock, the highest point in the county.

Living in Peterborough, NH

The village square centers on the Peterborough Diner, a Worcester railway lunch car, with the Town Hall hosting First Saturday contradances and the town marking First Friday each month with MacDowell artist talks, gallery openings and live music. Cultural stops include the Monadnock Center for History and Culture, the Sharon Arts Center galleries, the Peterborough Community Theater cinema and the Mariposa Museum of marionettes and puppets, while the Peterborough Players have staged repertory theatre since 1933. Outdoors, Miller State Park in the southeast corner holds the summit of South Pack Monadnock at 2,290 feet, a site for the NH Audubon autumn raptor count. The Edward MacDowell Dam and Lake recreation area has swimming, boating, hiking, cross-country skiing and disc golf. The Contoocook River, Nubanusit Brook and Otter Brook drain the town, and the town built New Hampshire's largest solar facility beside its wastewater plant.
