Welcome to Wakefield

On the Maine state line, which forms its eastern border, Wakefield, New Hampshire is a town in Carroll County. Its villages include Sanbornville, the town's retail district at the west end of Lovell Lake, the hilltop village of Wakefield Corner, East Wakefield, North Wakefield and Union. Route 16 runs through the town, Route 153 links the villages, and lakes and ponds shape much of the land in between.

Living in Wakefield, NH

Living in Wakefield means a town of lakes and ponds. Great East Lake fills the southeast and extends into Maine, Province Lake reaches the northern corner, and Lovell Lake, Pine River Pond, Belleau Lake, Balch Pond and Horn Pond lie across the rest of town. Sanbornville, at the junction of Routes 109 and 153, has been the retail district since the railroad arrived in 1871. Wakefield Corner, the original town center, is a hilltop village of antique buildings, and the Wakefield Inn, built in 1804 beside the old trade route through the Corner, still operates. Long Mountain, at 1,110 feet on the western border, is the highest point. The north half of town drains to the Saco River watershed and the south half to the Piscataqua.
