Welcome to Hanover
Hanover sits on the Connecticut River in Grafton County, facing Norwich, Vermont, across the water, with Lebanon to the south and Lyme, Canaan and Enfield on its other sides. It is best known as the home of Dartmouth College, founded in 1769 beside the town common. Most homes for sale in Hanover, NH are in or near the main village around the college, where Routes 10, 10A and 120 meet, with more rural land around Etna and Hanover Center.
Living in Hanover, NH
The main village, built on a level tract called the Plain about a mile from the river, holds Dartmouth's campus and the town common. Beyond it, the small rural villages of Etna and Hanover Center sit in the hills to the east, and the north peak of Moose Mountain, at 2,313 feet, is the town's high point. The Appalachian Trail crosses Hanover, linking with local trails and nature preserves, and the Velvet Rocks Trail along it has rock climbing and bouldering spots. Most of these trails work for snowshoes and cross-country skis in winter. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory is based here, as are Hypertherm and White Mountains Insurance Group. Public schools are Bernice A. Ray Elementary, Frances C. Richmond Middle School and Hanover High School.
