Jaffrey lies in eastern Cheshire County at the foot of Mount Monadnock, the 3,165-foot peak that is the highest point in both the town and the county. The main village grew up along the Contoocook River where U.S. Route 202 meets New Hampshire Routes 124 and 137. Jaffrey NH real estate spans that village, the smaller Jaffrey Center near the middle of town, and the countryside reaching toward Dublin, Peterborough, Rindge and Troy.

The Contoocook River once powered Jaffrey's mills, and that prosperity shows in early buildings such as the Town Meetinghouse, built in 1775. From the 1840s, summer hotels rose at the base of Mount Monadnock, and the mountain drew climbers including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Rudyard Kipling; the climb inspired Emerson's 1845 poem Monadnoc. Thorndike Pond lies in the north of town and Contoocook Lake on the southern boundary. Most of Jaffrey drains east through the Contoocook to the Merrimack, while the northwest corner falls into the Ashuelot and Connecticut River watershed. Elizabeth Yates set her Newbery Medal-winning biography Amos Fortune, Free Man here, and the author Willa Cather, a summer resident, is buried in the local cemetery.
