Welcome to Keene

Keene is the county seat of Cheshire County and the only city in it, set along the Ashuelot River in southwestern New Hampshire. State highways converge on the city from nine directions, among them Routes 9, 10, 12 and 101, and a limited-access bypass curves around the north, west and south sides of downtown. Anyone weighing Keene NH real estate is looking at the region's institutional center, home to Keene State College and Antioch University New England.

Living in Keene, NH

Downtown Keene centers on Main Street and Central Square, which the city rebuilt in 1987 to make the core more pedestrian-oriented. Since 2000 Keene has inventoried nearly 200 historic properties and created a heritage and downtown historic-district body to support restoring and reusing landmark buildings. Railroads shaped the city: the Cheshire Railroad arrived in 1848, the Stone Arch Bridge was built at West Keene, and by 1890 Keene was a regional railroad center. The Ashuelot River drains almost the whole city toward the Connecticut River, and Grays Hill, at 1,388 feet in the northwestern corner, is the highest ground. Dillant-Hopkins Airport sits just south of the city line in Swanzey. From 1991 to 2014 Keene hosted the state pumpkin festival, several times setting a world record for jack-o'-lanterns on display.
